At Triton, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword. It’s part of how we operate.

Each quarter, we review our practices to find ways to reduce our environmental impact while maintaining the excellent service our customers expect.

Here’s what we’ve been working on recently:

🦶 Reducing Our Carbon Footprint: By shifting more of our client interactions to virtual Teams meetings and shipping equipment rather than performing on-site installations, we’ve reduced our travel by 1,200 miles this month alone. Fewer miles on the road means lower carbon emissions – a win for us and the planet.

♻ Responsible Recycling: We believe old technology shouldn’t go to waste. This quarter, we’re recycling approximately 40 Polycom handsets through our WEEE-certified recycling contractor, ensuring these devices are disposed of responsibly and in line with industry regulations.

🏢 Office Improvements: Sustainability starts at home (or, in our case, the office). Our next action is to improve our recycling bin initiative to better separate recyclable materials and reduce landfill waste. We know there’s always more to do and are committed to pushing ourselves further every quarter.

Stay tuned for our next update as we continue to find new ways to make a difference.

At Triton Telecom, we’re doing our part for the planet. Last year, we committed to introducing a sustainability policy and here’s how we’re progressing:

✅ Reducing travel miles: We’ve exceeded our target by 262%! By embracing Teams calls and using public transport for appointments, we’re cutting unnecessary travel and reducing our carbon footprint. In addition, by being based in the Midlands, we make sure we’re never far away from the likes of Birmingham, Coventry, Solihull, Leicester and the rest of the UK.

♻ Recycling initiatives: We’re proud to hit 100% of our target for recycling electrical items through our dedicated contractor. Next on the agenda? Improving office recycling – dedicated bins are on their way!

🔋 Energy efficiency: After a recent energy audit, we’ve identified more ways to improve, including switching devices off at the mains and exploring cloud-based solutions to reduce energy usage. Our electricity usage is already down by 90%, with solar panels contributing to greener power on-site.

We’re thrilled with the progress so far and are excited to continue pushing for more sustainable practices.

We’ll be sharing quarterly updates to keep you informed on our journey, so keep an eye out for our next update!

UK businesses adjusted quickly to keep their operations running during the first national lockdown. Businesses achieved continuity at times by simply adapting their existing technology solutions and making use of free digital services wherever possible.

But as we progress now into more permanent ways of working in a post-Covid landscape, businesses must adjust their technology stack to not only survive the new conditions but thrive.

What is ‘Hybrid working’?

‘Hybrid working’ describes a working environment in which an organisation’s employees split their work between office-based locations and home or other remote locations. Several publicly visible, global businesses have announced their intention to continue this indefinitely, allowing employees to work how and where they choose, including BP, Twitter, Capital One and Microsoft.

Commercial benefits

Hybrid working presents organisations with new challenges, but it also offers them opportunities that may not have been considered viable in more traditional office-based work environments, also encouraging the adoption of cloud services as part of accelerated digital transformation projects.

Looking at it from the point of view of a business, hybrid working creates an environment in which organisations can potentially get the most out of their workforce. Every employee is working in their preferred way, in their chosen environment. What we’re seeing is businesses looking at the technology solutions they need to enable this.

From a commercial standpoint, the introduction of the cloud-based technology solutions required for effective hybrid working can save cost and increase efficiency if correctly implemented. Reducing on-site hardware for IT and telecommunications and switching to monthly subscription-based services will allow a transition from CapEx to OpEx, meaning no upfront expenditure and improved cash flow, while compliance, resilience and scalability are improved.

As well as the improved agility, it is possible that hybrid working can reduce costs in other ways, perhaps through lower demand for office space, or through simplifying IT requirements for a business. While it may seem complex to have remote workers utilising cloud-based tools, often your provider should be able to provide all the necessary training for your employees, meanwhile, the responsibility for hosting, servicing, and upgrading your services will also fall to the vendor.

Employee benefits

Employees of many businesses have now either worked in part or entirely from home for 12-18 months. It would be easy to assume the return to office will be painless and simple, but in some cases, workers have become used to their new routines, and the benefits brought about by working in such a way.

Saved costs, and the time gained by removing the need to commute, leading in many cases to a better work–life balance through allowing more time for family, friends, and exercise are the most tangible benefit of remote working. However, additionally, many workers cite a greater ability to focus with fewer distractions, IT upskilling and higher levels of motivation as further benefits.

A good hybrid working policy will make it seamless for employees who will likely benefit from these benefits, and for whom a role is suitable for remote work at times. However, it is also essential to consider those who are keen to return to the office. Ultimately this will lead to higher levels of employee job satisfaction and reduced absence rates.

Lastly, a hybrid working policy should allow businesses to attract new talent, driven to find an employer with flexible working options, or who may otherwise have been geographically unsuitable, or perhaps would not have been able to commit to a full-time commute to an office location.

New technology in an adapting world

Hybrid working can bring commercial and employee benefits when implemented well. Reduced office space and demands on IT and other services can save businesses costs, while cloud migration increases efficiency and agility. Meanwhile reduced time commuting, better work-life balance and increased flexibility can improve well-being for staff.

However, in a hybrid work environment, businesses continuing to rely on their existing technology stacks and business policies may struggle to adapt. Employees need to be able to work seamlessly between workplace and home, and there needs to be ease of connectivity between people in the office and those working remotely. Older technology solutions may not translate seamlessly into hybrid work environments and businesses may need to upgrade to see the full benefits.

How does your technology stack encourage relationship building and collaboration? Does your business use instant messaging or collaboration tools such as Teams to promote ‘ad-hoc’ discussion, and if so, are they setup for online meetings by default and do they also allow employees to make external phone calls from the same system? Considering a unified communications strategy could be central to ensuring many other challenges are easily overcome

As we came into the year 2022, one of Triton Telecom’s biggest goals was to give back to the community. Many people, unfortunately, find themselves in difficult situations, so we wanted to take on some difficulty ourselves and climb one of the biggest mountains in the UK!

Support us as we take a break from telecoms to climb Mount Snowdon in September. Find out more about the great causes and why they’re doing it below.

Who are the charities you are supporting through this?

Free@last work to improve the lives of children and young people of Nechells, Birmingham through providing fun activities as well as resources to equip the next generation for change.

Edward’s Trust offers a holistic approach to supporting parents and young children through bereavement and loss. They offer counselling (1 to 1 or as a couple) support groups, play therapy, wellbeing therapies and social events.

Smile for Joel works to support families torn apart by murder and terrorism, raising awareness to safety abroad and the Prevent programme.

Who from Triton Telecom is taking part?

 Ryan Sherwin, Technical Support

Natalie Worledge, Marketing Executive

Dean Billington, Director

Here’s what each climber had to say:

Ryan: “Climbing this mountain is going to be BIG change from my usual technical support role and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit nervous. However, I’m proud to be supporting these charities and I’m training hard in the gym! Wish me luck!”

Natalie: “I’ve climbed Snowdon once before, but I’m so excited to do it again – this time for three great causes! Even though I know it’ll be tough, I want to help make a difference in the lives that these charities so effectively help. Please help support us!”

Dean: “We are very proud to be supporting these charities who help less fortunate people with their challenges, their ‘mountain to climb’, so Triton are Climbing one. Please help us help them by sponsoring us to climb Mount Snowdon on September the 9th.”

When is it happening?

Although our training has already started, we won’t embark on our journey until the 9th of September – that’s plenty of time to get your donations in!

How can you support us?

We have a GoFundMe fundraiser that’s live RIGHT NOW. Our goal is £500, but we’re hoping to smash that out of the park and really raise a massive amount for these charities!

Here is the link: https://gofund.me/f45f060f
